WBC International Flywieght title holder Rey Megrino returns to the ring anew when he battles an upcoming Japanese fighter later this month.
Megrino, fresh from winning the crown last November in Thailand, is set to battle Japanese Kenjie Kubo, an upcoming fighter with a record of one win while the Misamis Occidental based fighter holds a record of18 wins, 20 loss and three draws.
"It will be a tune-up fight for Rey before he defends his title probably later this year," said La Trinidad Highland Boxing Gym's Brico Santig who manages Megrino.
The 26-year-old righty won the WBC International Flyweight crown against Thai Pongsaklek Wonjongkam by fashioning out a third round knock-out in the 2:06 mark of their scheduled 12 round encounter.
Wonjongkam won four of his six fights and his two losses were dealt by two Filipinos in 2012.
The Thai fighter suffered a sixth round knock-out against Filipino journeyman Sonny Boy Jaro for the WBC Flyweight title in March 2012 but bounced back with a 12 round unanimous win over Japanese Hyobu Nakagama to claim the vacant WBC International flyweight title.
Megrino, on the other hand, suffered three straight losses dating back to Janaury of 2012 including a unanimous loss against current WBO bantamweight champion Pungluang Sor Singyu in May 2012.
The Lopez Jaena, Misamis Occidental native then bounced back with three straight victories that started June in 2012 against Prell Tupas, Ryan Tampus before finishing the year with a huge win over the much experienced Wonjongkam.
Megrino is the stable mate of WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan, WBC Asia council Continental featherweight title holder Alvin Tam, IBF Pan Pacific minimumweight champion Matteo Handig; WBC Asia Council Continental light flyweight title champion Jay-ar Estremos; WBC Asia Council Continental minimumweight champion Donny Mabao; WBC Asia Council Continental lightweight champion Nelson Gulpe; and WBC Asian Boxing Council female minimumweight title holder Jujeath Nagaowa.(Roderick Osis)
