PHILEX MINING’s 10-man squad nearly swept all awards including the championship to retain the overall crown in the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines bowling competition recently.

Lady bowler Amada Zabala led the charge for Philex winning the High Single Scratch, High Single with Handicap, High Series Scratch, and High Series with Handicap — the same categories that Zabala won in the event’s Ladies’ Division, with the respective scores of 217, 261, 558, and 690 points.

“I was so happy and overwhelmed, especially since I didn’t expect to sweep the awards in the Ladies’ Division,” Zabala said, executive assistant to the company’s president and COO.

Zabala, however, did not clinch the Highest Overall Average, which went to Annie Macato of Inter-Asia Marine Transport, with a score of 162.45 points.

Philex Mining’s Emylin Paragas, accounting supervisor, and assistant manager for Exports Danilo Papasin said it is the fourth time Philex Mining became the overall champion since 1990 after the event’s maiden tournament in 1980.

Philex Mining earned an overall score of 319.198 points, followed by the combined team of COMP and Mines and Geosciences Bureau with 314.342, Filminera Resources (296.738), and FAG Bearing Center (296.713).

Besides Zabala, her colleagues who made up the Philex team were Commodities and Hedging specialist Rozano Santos, team captain; Paragas, assistant team captain; Edgardo Crisostomo, SVP for Materials Management and Corporate Office Admin; Bernard Baluda, technical manager at the Engineering Department; Dominador Forca Jr., manager of IT Department; Noel Oliveros, division manger for Exploration; Papasin; Ronald Sison, a computer engineer at the IT Department; and Business Development manager Anna Leslie Sta. Ana.

Baluda was third runner-up in the Highest Overall Average in the Men’s Division, with a score of 175.4 points.

Paragas, who swept the awards in the Ladies’ Division in 2010 but did not earn the highest overall average, was the fourth runner-up in the 2012 Highest Overall Average with a score of 154.94 points.

She was also first runner-up to Zabala in both the High Single Scratch Game and High Single Game with Handicap, garnering scores of 213 and 249 points, respectively.

“I had not played so often in 2012, so I must have lacked the necessary practice,” she stressed, but added that she was so happy for Philex Mining being the champion for the second year in a row.

In the penultimate master’s event, Paragas was third runner-up in Class A, Ladies’ Division, with a tournament average score of 155 points while Sta. Ana was fourth runner-up in Class B with 137 points.

In the Men’s Division, Forca and Santos were third runners-up in Class A with a tournament average score of 166 points and in Class B with 158 points, respectively.
