LUNA, APAYAO — Despite the strong surge of Apayao Province in the athletics competition in the ongoing Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Baguio City remains atop the overall standings going into the penultimate day of competition.

The Big City retained its stronghold in arnis, gymnastics, swimming, and tae kwon do to amass an aggregate total of 399.5 points with 182.5 coming from the Elementary and 217 from the secondary division.

Baguio City thus enjoy at least a hundred points lead in the overall classification for the championship with one day of competition left in the seven province and one city regional sports meet.

“Expected na namin na may laban ang Apayao kasi nakita namin yung preparation. But with the way we are looking at the overall standings, mahihirapan na silang makahabol,” said a confident Baguio general athletic manager Fernando Eliponga.

Apayao is eclipsing its seventh place finish overall in the last five years as it zoomed to the number two spot dislodging perennial second placer Benguet in the overall standings.

The host province took key victories in elementary table tennis girls, volleyball boys with a second place finish in chess boys while the secondary division took the top spot in volleyball girls for a 169.5 four day total.

Benguet is in close second with 156.1 from the combined efforts of the elementary and secondary level to stay within the third spot.

“Almost 80 percent done na ang Caraa. It’s a toss-up between Apayao and Benguet kung sino yung magiging number two pagakatapos ng competition,” added Eliponga.

Mt. Province is also in contention for the number three spot with 140.1 points after taking the championship in elementary boxing.

“We could say na happy pa rin tayo sa naging result ng Caraa kasi namaintain naman natin yung ibang sports gaya ng arnis, at swimming,” Eliponga continued.

With Baguio in the brink of retaining the overall crown since 2008, Eliponga said they are now looking forward to next year’s regional meet.

“At least ngayon alam na natin na hind lang Benguet ang dapat paghandaan kundi pati na rin Apayao,” added Eliponga.
