GWE clips struggling Cardinals in BFF Cup

CONTRACTING services GWE started slow but finished with flare by securing their fourth victory in six outings by subduing a struggling UB Cardinals with a 102-96 victory in the on-going Panagbenga Cup 2013 at the Easter College gym.

GWE leaned on the 42 point output of Alex De Guzman to lead all scorers and repeated over the Cardinals in their second round of eliminations in the open bracket of the annual basketball tournament as part of the Baguio flower Festival.

The Cardinals was their usual self in the opening canto firing away five triples, three courtesy of Clayriel Elefante that saw them erect a 13-23 lead with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter and close out the period with a 24-33 edge.

GWE then came close with by one anchored on De Guzman’s six point burst in an 8-0 run for a 32-33 count with 7:25 remaining in the first half of the ball game but the Cardinals countered with a run of their own to enjoy a 42-48 advantage midway before closing the second period with a 51-52 lead.

Both teams slowed down in their offense that eventually saw them tying the ball game at 55 before GWE finally got a taste of their first lead of the ball game at 57-55 with 7:29 remaining in the third period on a Kreshnel Fochad free throw.

The Cardinals would then tie it again at 57 all courtesy of Kevin Orduna but UB slowly faded away as GWE outscored the collegiate multi titlist in the succeeding six minutes of the third period to erect a 10 point advantage, 76-66, with a minute remaining.

Up by 10 at the opening of the fourth period, GWE slowed down while the Cardinals made one final push to come close at four, 84-80 with 6:31 remaining.

De Guzman then scored back-to-back baskets to put GWE on top by eight anew at 88-80 with 5:44 remaining.

The Cardinals kept fighting back in the remaining of the ball game with the closets the get was at 94-89 on and Elefante’s triple.

Brent Esteban added 16 for GWE in handling the Cardinals their sixth loss in seven outings despite the balance scoring that saw five putting up double figures led by Ian Sena’s 18 markers.

Elefante had 17 from his five triples while team captain Kevin Orduna had 14 as Keff Ocasion and Aljon Macalintal adding 12 and 11 points each.
