Baguio judoka boosts morale after Nanjing-A A +A

BAGUIO'S lone representative to the 2nd Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China last August 16-24 has gained overwhelming experience after competing against heavier, taller, and older youths from other Asian countries.
Fifteen-year-old Floyd Derek Rillera, who turns sixteen Saturday, August 24, admits the international competition helped him boost his morale and vowed to place higher in future competitions.
A judo practitioner since seven years old, Floyd surpassed the elimination round after winning against Palestinian Ahmed Aburumaila from points and penalties after four minutes of intense judo.
He later succumbed to eventual gold medalist Doslan Ruziev of Uzbekhistan via submission, after the heavier and taller Ruziev pulled Rillera to the ground, where the more experienced teen executed his excellent ground game to choke the puny Rillera into tapping out after more than two minutes in their semifinal match.
"Sayang po, nanghihinayang ako dahil madami akong hinde nagawa dun sa laro namin ni Doslan," Rillera said admitting the Uzbekh was superior in strength and power especially in the ground game.
His win against the Palestine may have given a signal for the Uzbekh coach to instruct Doslan to pull Rillera into the ground game where he is more skilled and heavier.
This, after seeing Rillera easily outmatch the Palestine in speed and standing fight skills especially in one arm shoulder throw.
"Yung weight ko po ngayon ang dapat kong alagaan at dapat po magpabigat kasi dehado po talaga laban sa kanila, lalo na at matatangkad pa sila," added Rillera who competed under the -55 kgs. boy's Judo despite scaling the weights at 44 kgs only.
Rillera championed Baguio in the 2011 and 2012 Batang Pinoy Games clinching the gold medal which eventually qualified him for the Nanjing games.
He was also sponsored by the British council last year to observe in the 2012 London Olympic games as well as in academics at the St Bede's academy with other Batang Pinoy gold medalists and deserving athletes.
