BADMINTON powerhouse Doña Nicasia and Baguio City National High School smashed their way to the championship to rule the elementary and high school divisions of the third YMCA Invitational Badminton tournament recently.
Doña Nicasia came tied with Lucban Elementary School with three gold medals but the two bronze medals mattered the most for the Aurora Hill based school in winning the championship in the elementary division.
Chayne Ngolab, Aberson Fomocod, Jorlene Cupido and Jasmine Joy Talavera led the Doña Nicasia in Level A competition while brothers Howard and Humphry Giaco together with Faith Amugawan and Athena Rose Bella grabbed the gold for Lucban in Level B competition.
"The championship title is a fruit of diligence, conscientious, hard work and training of the pupils. While they were in rigid training, they were also excelling academically. They balanced their time in academics and badminton. They are challenged and inspired by their coach and trainer not only to play but to achieve their goal and that is to win the championship," said Doña Nicacia coach Ronel Manzano.
City High, meanwhile, leaned on Kyle Dela Cruz and Jerome Erick Serrano, Joarl Cupido and Reden Boromeo, Loize Angelique Olorozo and Samantha Baysa and Maria Von Pinlac with Gabriel Villamor to win the over-all in the secondary division.
The largest high school north of Manila had three gold medals including two silver and barely got a challenge as Hope Christian Academy came in second.
"Being the over-all champion in that event is the result of their hardship in their everyday training. It is also the result of their discipline," said coach Saxton Anayasan.
In the seniors division, Manila took home seven gold and two silver medals to take home the overall title besting local entries and out of towners.
Other badminton clubs who joined the event are Ilocos Sur Badminton Club, Cooyeesan, teams from Nueva Ecija, Benguet and Pangasinan. (With reports from Jayza Almira Labis/UB Intern)
