IN A game of wit and intensity, the UB Lady Cardinal outclassed defending champion SLU Lady Navigators in four sets as action heats up in women’s volleyball of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League.
Season 25 champion Lady Cardinals bucked a slow start and managed to get their acts together in three successive sets, 22-25, 25-22,25-19,27-25 to set in its motion for a title bid at the UC gym during the weekend.
With their first game victory, coach Jun Nisperos is the happiest in the team after defeating one of the most formidable line-up in women’s volleyball of the largest collegiate league north of Manila.
"Pinakita lang ng mga bata kung anu 'yung kaya nilang gawin sa laro at masaya ako kasi maganda yung execution ng mga plays namin," said Nisperos.
The Lady Cardinals seem to have caught off some rust in the first set with the Lady Navigators scoring at will led by second year player Colleen Rossi together with team captain Fleurizze Marian Torres, Keeley Joy Betinio and Elaine Joy Daniel hat even saw them enjoy a five point lead going in the frame of the first set.
And with the first set behind their back, the Lady Cardinals sensed urgency as it went right away to power hitter Joan Lunday to carry the squad with a little help from Roxanne Madulid and veterans Princess Cariño and rookie Carmela Dickensen.
"Nung second set na, sinabi ko adjust sila ng kunti sa depensa tapos iwas lang sa error kaya ayun nadepensahan naming ng maayos yung mga spikers nila," quipped Nisperos who will once again try to chase that seemingly elusive volleyball crown he only held twice since 2004.
Defending champion Lady Navigators then tried to push the ball game to a fifth set decider controlling the offense that saw them enjoy a 16 – 22 advantage in the fourth set.
Slowly but surely, the Lady Cardinals regained their composure and climbed back to the ball game and tied the count at 23 all.
The Lady Cardinals could have closed the Lady Navigators with momentum on their side but SLU was just a tough nut to crack forcing UB to close out the defending champion at 27-25.
And with the victory at hand, the Lady Cardinals were able to exact revenge from the team that booted them out of contention during last year’s semis match –up in five gruelling sets.
“Masaya lang kami kasi nung last year eh kami yung tinalo nila sa semis kaya sa tingin ko eh medyo maganda ang season na eto para sa amin,” added Nisperos.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals take it slow when they face a hapless PCC Lady Warriors on September 5 before facing favourite UC Lady Jaguars on Sept 7 and close out the first round of the eliminations over UP Lady Marrons.
Earlier, UP-Baguio Lady Maroons scored their first victory of the tournament after easily dispatching the PCC Lady Warriors, 25-7, 25-10, 25-15.
In the men’s division, Cordillera Career Development College Admirals shutdown Phil. Military Academy, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 while defending champion SLU Navigators drove out UP, 25-12,25-12,25-14.
Host UC Jaguars survived a gritty Cardinals with a four setto victory, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25,25-17.
Baguio Central University Eagles toned down Baguio College of Technology Atoms, 25-16, 25-22,25-16.
