THE University of the Cordilleras Lady Jaguars extended their winning streak to four to stay unbeaten in women’s basketball of the Baguio –Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27.
Defending champion UC pulled out a come from behind victory over rival Saint Louis University, 83-80, at the SLU Prince Bernhard gym during the weekend.
Lady Jaguars head coach Alvin Santos admits the team was uneasy during the first three quarters who felt intimidated with the huge crowd.
"Ninenerbiyos sila dahil sa crowd, hindi lang siguro sanay, pero as we go on nakapag-adjust naman," Santos said.
Both teams had an almost even first quarter, equally shooting from mutual ends of the floor but the difference came when the Jaguars took a clean play closing the period with a 14 – 12 advantage.
With SLU applying full court pressure and forcing fouls against their opponents, the Navigator turned the table upside-down to earn a nine point lead before the closing of first half, 29 – 38.
Troubled by foul and an early penalty, the defending champion continue to trail the Lady Navigators to enjoy a 42-51 lead with six minutes left in the third period.
Needing a little spark, Lady Jaguars Jaguars Jessica Mae Pingil and Katty Toribio fired a 12 -2 blast to regain the lead at the end of third period with a slim 54-53 edge.
Bankrolled by that furious late third quarter rally, the Lady Jaguars extended the lead to 10, and was never challenged even with SLU coming close by three midway in the fourth period.
With the win, Santos said that they will stay focused and carry out the same amount of energy for the succeeding games.
“Mahirap nang magsalita, we will just try our best, as usual running game yan,” Santos added.
Earlier, in men’s basketball, the UB Cardinals whipped Cordillera Career Development College to extend their winning streak to three after cruising to a 103 – 69 victory. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
