THE University of the Cordilleras Jaguars continued their winning streak by beating University of the Philippines – Baguio in the women’s basketball of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27.
Playing in front of a hostile home court, the Lady Jaguars simply dominated UP, 77-41, to stay on top with its fifth straight victory and no lose record.
Jaguars head coach Alvin Santos said the team is well prepared to play during their game.
"Medyo praktisado ng konti, pero ok lang hindi pa natin masasabi sa mga susunod, kelangan pa rin na magprepare," Santos said.
The defending champion Lady Jaguars played rough running and defending all over the floor during the first quarter hanging by a slight five point lead at the first five minutes of the game, 9-4.
Despite the initial efforts of the Lady Maroons, the veteran UC team never loosened the defence forcing turnovers and converting it to fast break points ending the first, 25-7, Jaguars edge.
At the first five minutes of second quarter, the Maroons stepped-up on their defence slowing down the offensive efforts of the Jaguars, UP’s Fatima Andrea Cruz and Maridel Dimaculangan played their role stopping score attempts from under the basket.
It was only during the last four minutes of the second when the Lady Jaguars were able to adjust and continue to convert points despite UC’s key player Jessica Mae Pingil wasting and missing a lot of open shots at fast breaks but still enjoyed a 39-15 lead.
Building an insurmountable lead at the third quarter, the Jaguars nailed the opponents and erect a 36 points advantage at the close of the quarter, 58-22.
Pingil who had a worst shooting night said she needs to avoid those mistakes in their next games.
"Medyo malakas ata ang mga bitaw ko kanina, medyo naninibago kasi ako dun sa gamit na bola," Pingil said.
According to coach Santos, his team should remain cautious and lessen errors for the following games.
"Medyo nag-iimprove naman na pero kailangan pa rin na palakasin ang defense, although nahihirapan rin kasi sila dun sa bagong ginawang depensa, hindi pa nila kaya," Santos added. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
