UNIVERSITY of Baguio Cardinals continued their hot streak winning their seventh straight after beating Saint Louis University Navigators in men’s basketball of the 27th season of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League.
The Cardinals, eyeing this season’s championship title, trounced the Navigators to secure the top spot of the eliminations in an 82-64 win Monday afternoon at the UB gymnasium.
UB flourished over the leadership of big man Noel Cathedral who churned in 19 points including five rebounds and one block.
The senior player said he was quite happy with the position he and his team are in right now but shows regret after a not so good performance in their offense.
“Siyempre masaya ako sa panalo na ito, pero dismayado pa rin nang konti kasi mas nag-focus lang kami sa depensa ngayong game na ito, hindi masyado sa offense,” Cathedral said.
But Cardinals coach Joel Flores believes his team could step their game up a little better.
“Siguro masyadong relax yung kalaban kaya siyempre relax din kami, siguro kapag mas mahigpit ang laban lahat naman eh mag-step up rin para sa game,” Flores said.
The home playing Cardinals never let the visiting Navigators take command of the floor as they took an early six point lead to nothing, as they came out on top at the end of first quarter, 22-15.
The many time basketball champion was all over in the second period with open shots while providing good interior defence against the hapless Navigators for a commanding 41-25 lead at the half.
The Cardinals then collectively continued to extend the lead as Kendrick Basan, Darien Ocassion, and Renzae Cosme chipping fourteen points in the early four minutes of the third period and from then on, it was a basketball clinic for the visiting SLU.
“Sa ngayon we are preparing for the championship, although meron pang isang game na susunod tapusin muna namin, kapag na-sweep mo kasi waiting kana for championship,” said Flores.
Flores said the team is showing confidence to secure this seasons victory not only for him but for the whole school also.
"Kaya naman kung sa kaya, pero siyempre kakayanin, tiwala naman ako sa mga players ko nung simula pa lang," Flores added.
Earlier in the distaff side the Lady Navigators won over UP Lady Maroons, 55-46 for the team’s fourth victory in five outings which put them in solos second behind the unbeaten UC Lady Jaguars. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
