UNIVERSITY of Baguio primed up its title bid in women’s volleyball after stopping University of the Cordilleras in straight sets, 25-15,25-9,28-26 at the UC gym Wednesday afternoon.
It was a rough day for the Lady Jaguars as the Lady Cardinals took on their evenly matched opponent as Joan Lunday banged away 13 hits, including five kills in the third set, three blocks and a back-to-back service ace during the second in yet another impressive performance from the UB veteran.
Cardinals head coach Jun Nisperos was obviously happy about their win saying the change in the team’s strategies worked for the team avenging their first round loss against the six time title holder.
“At least nagbago yung depensa naming saka medyo sumipag nga dun sa mga receive ng bola kaya nanalo kami sa kanila,” said Nisperos.
“Noong dati kasi nagkulang kami ng sobra dun sa depensa kaya ngayon pinagana namin ng sobra para makapag-set ng magandang atake,” Nisperos added.
The Lady Cardinals brought with them their A-game creating an early 11-3 lead in the first set of the game with Princess Cariño Cherry Atuban, and Maria Mejia sweeping the floor.
It was the same story in the second set as UB continued their dominance with the Lady Jaguars scrambling for points.
The Lady Jaguars bounced back in the third set trying to extend the game to a possible fourth set leading by three early in the set before UB tied the score at 22.
Lunday, despite their performance, said they are not yet looking beyond the finals and needs to take one game at a time.
“Basta sa ngayon po gusto lang namin na ipanalo isa-isa yung mga laban hangang sa umabot na sa finals, sa palagay ko basta gawin namin ng maayos yun mga laro mananalo kami with God in our side,” said Nunday.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals pu8shed themselves atop the team standings with four wins and one loss and currently tied with the Saint Louis University Lady Navigators who was playing against UP-Baguio as of press time. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
