Largest martial arts event in Baguio set-A A +A

ESTIMATED 3,000 spectators are expected to attend the mixed martial arts tournament organized by the Philippine Fullcontact Kickboxing Council Inc. (Fullcon) in coordination with the local government as part of City’s month long 104th charter celebration at the Baguio Convention Center slated September 28.
Dubbed as "Martial Rule – In the Search for Glory," the event will have thirty pairs of fighters that will come close and showcase different martial art disciplines that will include four bouts of mixed martial arts, six bouts of kickboxing, four bouts of boxing, and two for muay thai.
Fullcon secretary general and lawyer Kissack Gabaen, said the main purpose of the event is to promote the Cordillera specifically Baguio as the center for combative sports in the Philippines.
“As we see, all of our fighters especially here in the Cordillera who is in line with combative sports show great potential,” said Gabaen.
Fullcon is an organization created to give support to all of fighting and combat clubs here in Baguio City, Cordillera, and Metro Manila, including others clubs that spread internationally such in Canada, USA, Dubai, Malaysia, and China.
Fullcon president Agustin Balba, said one of the priorities of the organization is to help in the promotion of the events such as this.
"We only started Fullcon in the Cordillera but as planned we are conducting membership drives to all martial artists and martial arts club who are interested to join nationwide," Balba said.
At present, Fullcon is comprised of 23 different clubs that have hundreds of members from all over Luzon.
Gabaen said it will be the fourth time their organization will be holding a martial arts event during this year and a special part of the event is to celebrate with the whole month’s charter anniversary.
The MMA bout will be highlighted by the main event from Alvin Velasco of Team Torogi - Benguet Fitness Center against John Chris Corton of Team Lakay, and Sammy Mathew of Universal Martial Arts Gym versus Stephen Luman of Team Lakay.
Prime fighters from Manila will also take part in the event to promote Pencak Silat, a new practice in combat sports in the Philippines.
Organizers said participants will be given certificates and cash incentives for the winners of the different martial art contests.
Since the rise of this different combat sports in the country, Wushu has been the highest recognized event that Filipinos excelled in, winning several medals from the international Olympics of whom the contenders are originally from the Cordillera.
Supporting Martial Rule are the Office of the Mayor, Office of the Congressman, Ayala Corporation, Sunshine Supermarket, and Baguio’s Finest Security Agency.
