SLU extends streak in men’s volleyball-A A +A

WHILE their lady counterparts cruised to the finals, Saint Louis University (SLU) extended their streak to six downing Cordillera Career Development College during the weekend for another crack at the crown of men’s volleyball.
Defending champion SLU struck hard to win in straight sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25- 14, to remain unscathed in the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27.
But despite the win, Navigators head coach Gerald Peralta said he is not satisfied with how the team has handled their opponents.
"Although nanalo, hindi yun yung ini-expect ko na performance from them, dahil nga sa postponed na laro kahapon nagkaroon ng biglang adjustments sa mind-set since yung kalaro kaya naiba," Peralta said.
It was a close rally for both teams during the first set playing a see-saw lead for either one until SLU found their rhythm forcing errors on the other end of the floor.
At the start of the second set, SLU was firing from all angles of the floor as they rally to an early 6-0 lead.
But the visiting CCDC showed they still got some tricks to show as Rolex Soltero and Pedro Sally Jr., stepped up their game forcing the other side to scramble and tie the ball game at 7-7.
But the Navigators regrouped as Leonard Cruz slowed the Admirals offense with his defence and Lucky Brian Biscocho powering SLU’s offensive attacks.
The third set was almost a walk in the park as the Navigators nailed the Admirals to an early 11-3 run, but CCDC managed to close the gap at 18-12.
“Hindi muna namin iniisip na sa championship agad, dapat step by step kami, yun muna and aayusin,” said Cruz.
The Navigators are set to face the UC Jaguars on Tuesday with the winner assured of claiming the top spot as both share identical 6-0 record after defeating Baguio Central University, 25-7, 25-13, 25-11, in an earlier game. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
