Council OKs cash incentive revision in 2nd reading-A A +A
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
THE City Council recently approved on second reading a resolution granting increase for incentives given to local athletes and coaches during Monday’s regular council meeting.
Proponent Councilor Faustino Olowan said it will nonetheless give more benefits to the qualified athletes and coaches whose performances reward the city in international, national, regional, and city wide competitions.
"If passed into law, this will be a great share mostly in helping our youth to do better in their sports performances," Olowan said.
From the former resolution No. 092 back in 1993, the city will give top international athletes P10,000 for gold; P5,000 for silver; and P3,000 for bronze medals. The coaches, on the other hand, get P5,000, P3,000; and P2,000, respectively.
Meanwhile Olowan’s revisions if approved will grant P20,000, P15,000 and P10,000, respectively, for gold, silver and bronze medals. The winning coaches get P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000 each separately.
Proposed funding to be used in this resolution will come from a portion of the shares the city has in the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in Loakan.
The councillor also said he is almost finished in drafting a local sports code by the end of September, and plans to present in session by the early October to the City Council.
Despite the long wait for amending resolutions to fully turn into law, issues concerning proper distribution of budget for sports are still pending.
Olowan said from 2007, some of the intended cash incentives for local athletes have not yet been given appropriately by the city.
Olowan said those allocations should have already been given earlier to avoid any complications.
"We will see if those problems will be addressed or included in the 2014 budget," Olowan added. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
