Hundreds in 1st Baguio Day Badminton tilt-A A +A

SOME 400 smashers are seen to join the 1st Baguio Day Badminton Tournament at the University of the Cordilleras gymnasium which formally opens today, Sept. 28.
University of the Cordilleras – Center for Sports Development (UC-CSD) in coordination with the City Government of Baguio spearheaded the first ever badminton competition in celebration of the 104th charter anniversary of the city.
Tournament organizer and UC badminton coach Ramir Austria said the tournament is the first, and the biggest badminton event hosted and organized by UC.
The event is hoped to develop and enhance the skills and camaraderie of badminton enthusiasts from different academic institutions and badminton clubs from the city and neighboring provinces.
UC Athletic director Ruel Costina said the event is part of the school’s corporate social responsibility of which is “giving back to the community”.
“Pinag-iisipan kasi namin dito before ang iba pang possible na programs to help the community, so eto nga we managed to come up with a badminton tournament,” said Austria.
Organizers agreed that by promoting badminton as a sport, they also came to help endorse Baguio City as a center for sports development in northern Luzon.
The two day event will have its preliminary games today where contenders for elementary and high school divisions will compete.
On the penultimate day, the top collegiate and corporate players see action as they vie for top honors in different categories.
Former RP team members Reggie Depolonia, Sherman Olania, Arthur Yuson and the likes are expected to join and show on the event.
Participants coming as far as Cabanatuan, San Jose, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Manila, La Union, and Ilocos will also join.
Meanwhile local competitors such as Texas Instruments, Coyeesan, YMCA, University of the Cordilleras, Philippine Military Academy, Saint Louis University, and partners from La Trinidad will also take a shot at the title.
“Actually nung in-open naming yung registration nagulat kami since sobrang dami ng mga nagpalista, to think that this is the first time na magkakaroon ng ganito,” Austria said.
All scheduled games have been divided to equally match the skills and abilities of the participating players.
All winners of each event will receive trophies including cash prizes that will amount to as much as 80,000 pesos according to the organizers.
“Hopefully this will be a success and maybe next kapag mas napaghandaan ng maiigi kakayanin pa ulit nating gawin pang mas malaki yung event,” Austria said. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
