UNIVERSITY of the Cordilleras Jaguars smashed their way to the championship in sharing the top honors of the badminton tournament with Saint Louis University in season 27 of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League.
With the long title drought, Jaguars coach Ramir Austria said it was one of the most rewarding victory for the team after returning to the top.
“The last time UC took home the title was six years ago, that was the time after na mag-grand slam ang Jaguars sa badminton from 2005 until 2007,” said Austria.
The Jaguars squandered a twice to beat edge after the first match against the Navigators, as Rogelio Cayabyab fell against SLU’s Norman Elpa Jr. in the first singles, 17-21, 11-21, while Anthony Pontalba bowed to Joshua Adrian Talmo of the Navigators in the second singles, 21-23, 9-21.
But the Jaguars recomposed themselves after being trampled by SLU in the first round with Cayabyab overpowering Elpa, 19-21, 21-19, 21-16, in the men’s first round singles.
The Navigators staged a comeback in the doubles match but failed with the Jaguars duo of Jessie Lagera and Edgar Salazar routing Gino Daniel Abalos and Jason Paulo Abalos, 21-12, 15-21, 21-16, in the men’s doubles that sealed the victory for UC.
“Na-iintimidate kami sa crowd, masyado kasing marami ang supporter ng SLU dahil nga home crowd nila dun pero inisip na lang ng team na dapat ipanalo ko yung laro for UC,” a blissful Salazar said.
“Sobra din na nakaka-pressure kapag nakakalamang yung kalaban, medyo nahirapan na kami nun pero kinaya pa rin namin,” Salazar added.
Austria said their current victory hopes to be a motivating factor for his players to defend the title in next year’s BBEAL.
“Hopefully eto na ulit yung umpisa ng winning streak for UC, kaya sisiguraduhin namin na rigid pa rin ang training even after BBEAL para hind maging stagnant ang laro ng players,” Austria quipped.
On the distaff side, the SLU Navigators bagged the championship as Chastine Dela Cruz edged Camille Calpotura of UC, 21-18, 21-15, in the women’s singles, while SLU’s badminton duo of Minie Bagyan and Krizzia Pasag upended UC’s Daniel Madero and Aurie Lawana, 21-15, 21-11 in the women’s doubles.
