JOHN CHRIS Corton simply pummelled Alvin Velasco to the ground to win by referee stoppage during the second round in a professional MMA bout held at the Baguio Convention Center Saturday evening.
Corton took down Velasco with his superior ground skills to dominate the more experienced fighter at the recent Martial Rule – In Search for Glory.
Corton, who trained hard to improve his ground game, neutralized Velasco’s superb striking game with his classy grappling and wrestling skills.
“Game plan talaga ng team na dalhin sa ground ang laro sa laban ko ngayon, actually we agreed na kung lalabanan ko siya na nakatayo alanganin na matalo ko siya ng ganito,” Corton said.
“Motivated rin ako ng sobra coming into this fight dahil sa alam kong natalo rin ng team mate ko yung isa rin niyang kasama, at alam ko na kaya ko rin tuladan,” added Corton.
The less experienced fighter from Team Lakay gained control over his opponent successfully by taking him down and attempted a rear neck choke early in the first round.
But conditioning was also good for Velasco as he was able to stop the competition and maneuver into a successful full guard position as Corton stayed atop him and take control for the duration of the round.
With the second round’s bell, Corton immediately brought back Velasco’s back against the canvass as he mounts for side control.
Using his speed and grappling ability, Corton eventually took control over his opponents and deliver a devastating ground and pound strikes to the head of his opponent.
Velasco failed to defend himself that resulted in an early referee stoppage before the end of the second round.
Team Lakay coach Marquez Sangiao was pleased with the early victory of his fighter after the game.
“Nasunod naman kasi nang maayos yung game plan, which sinabi ko sa kanya na huwag mong sabayan yung laro ng kalaban but instead dapat pumunta ka sa disadvantage niya hanggang sa nakuha niya sa ground and pound,” Sangiao said.
“Motivated tayo with this win, pero mahirap since marami na ang humahabol so siguro ang problem sa ngayon eh dapat pagbutihan at palakasin pa yung team,” Sangiao added.
FullCon secretary general and event’s organizer lawyer Kissack Gabaen was pleased with the outcome adding “I think the event was successful even though there were a few errors in some of the results of the fights which we managed to correct immediately”.
