UNIVERSITY of Baguio (UB) lived another day by tying their best of three series against men’s basketball defending champion University of the Cordilleras in the Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27.
The UB Cardinals bounced back from a sorry game 1 loss and came back even stronger to tie the series after coming up with a 66–57 victory at the jam-packed UC gym Wednesday.
“We just did plain defense, that’s what we lacked during the first game so I told my players to play hard down the basket,” Flores said, adding it was a breather for the team to steal game two and force a decider.
“Hopefully, kaya pa namin sa deciding game, medyo mahirap pero kakayanin,” Flores added.
The visiting Cardinals raced to an early 10-2 advantage with UC shooting poorly and was just held to only six points at the end of the first 10 minutes with UB leading, 14-6.
Aside from their shooting woes, the Jaguars found themselves in early foul trouble that slowed down their offense to give the Cardinals a 35 – 19 breather during the break.
Sensing urgency, the defending champion tried to stage a comeback in the third quarter as Ryan Tomanan, Andrew Payas, and Chad Russell Villanueva lead a 13 point rally to lessen the gap at 40 – 30, with 2:03 remaining in the period.
But the Cardinals simply doused cold water on the Jaguars hot streak and close the third canto with a 46-35 lead.
UB ran to early foul trouble in the pay canto that sent them into the penalty but the Jaguars failed to capitalize in the free throw lane while the Cardinals took control of the lead until the final buzzer.
Mark Arellano was a major factor in the Cardinals win with 11 points that include nine rebounds and six blocks.
“Noong last game kasi namin natalo kami sa rebound and defence, kaya sabi ni coach dapat i-improve namin at yun nga lumabas sa game na ito,” Arellano said.
Earlier in the distaff, the UC Jaguars tied their own finals series with the SLU Navigators, 70-65, marching behind Cheryl Magno’s 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
As of press time, the do-or-die rubbermatch are being played at the SLU St. Bernhard gym.
