INMATE Ramil delos Reyes pushed himself to key victories to win the championship at the close of the Kordilyera Regional Chess Association first tournament inside the Baguio City Jail recently.
Delos Reyes was actually ranked 7th after three rounds but scored three more wins to top the semifinals and defeated Resty Ganise to march to the finals of the competition before edging Lida Calaca in the finals and snatch the P3,000 top purse.
Calaca took the 1st runner-up honors with P2,000 in cash prize after his semifinals win against Jomari Ibrado who settled for 2nd runner-up honors with P,1000 in cash price in the tournament backed by Rep. Nicasio Aliping Jr.
Some 40 inmates inside the BCJ took their time out to join the one day tournament which used the Swiss system format involving several rounds of competition where the winners are the players with the highest aggregate of points earned from each round.
KRCA vice president Roger Garcia said the group hopes to make the tournament inside the jail a monthly affair to promote the sport among the inmates.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed so we could hold monthly events there and if plans push through, we will also be holding a battle of the champions among the inmates,” Garcia said.
Garcia added the battle of champions will see winners in the monthly competitions battle it out next year.
"I'm very thankful to City jail Warden J/CInsp. Wilson Banasen and and SJ03 Pablo Las-egan Jr. for their support and allow us to conduct the tournament," added Garcia.
