AFTER being disqualified last season, the University of the Cordilleras Jaguars emerged as champions of sepak takraw in the 27th season of Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League.
UC Jaguars roared over the twice-to-beat advantage of the Saint Louis University Navigators in a third regulation clinch in the second finals scoring, 12-15, 15-7, 15-10, to capture the victory at the UC gym Sunday evening.
Jaguars head coach Antonio Aquision said it is quite an honor to win the championship title for the whole university.
"Sulit na sulit ang pagkapanalo namin this year lalo pa nga at na-disqualify ang team noong nakaraang taon but winning today makes the wait worth it," said Aquision.
"Although maraming errors sa unang regulation, sinabi ko lang sa mga players na gandahan ang receive para successful ang rally ng mga bola," Aquision added.
UC was bannered by Ferdinand Sibayan, Imar Campana, Jhunjie Tiboldec, Kenneth Rivera, Mark Abdon, Lucky Mateo, Gabriel Agustin, Edgar Sarlipan, and Emmanuel Cupido.
The Navigators dominated UC to sweep the eliminations giving them the twice-to-beat advantage.
During the first finals the Jaguars took command of the floor in a 2-0 win, 15-11, 15-13 and 13-15, 15-12, 15-11 regulation, leading UC to the next round of finals match.
On the second finals first stringers Sibayan, Tiboldec, and Campana won over SLU’s Joe Bucalen, Gelbin Alunes, Aldrin Alodos, and Jon Vic Astillero, 15-8, 15-11.
But the Navigators were never doused early as MJ Santos, Kennedy Longchaya, and Joel Kewan took the second regulation against Mateo, Agustin and Rivera to clinch a decision, 7-15, 15-8, 10-15.
During the third regulation SLU tied UC, 9-9, but the Jaguars were able to widen the gap up to 13-9, which eventually led to their sweet victory.
"Nagtiwala lang ako sa mga kasama ko, walang na-rattle sa amin sa finals kaya yun nanalo kami," said Cupido.
"Yung pagka-disqualify namin last year okay lang kasi nakabawi naman na kami ngayon kaya sa isip masya na nanalo kami this year," Cupido added.
Navigators head coach Anna Liza Cabanilla said her players were not able to lessen ball errors during the finals match.
"Sa nakita ko sa laro namin kulang yung receive na maayos sa bola, kaya hindi kami makapalo ng maganda," said Cabanilla.
"Lumalaban naman ang players pero dahil nga sa kulang ang setting ng ball hindi talaga kami maka-attack ng maayos," Cabanilla added.
Meanwhile Benguet State University ranked third who experienced down fall during their semis match-up against the Jaguars, University of Baguio on the other hand stayed at number four who wounded themselves early on the eliminations round.
