UNIVERSITY of Baguio dethroned defending champion Saint Louis University Saturday evening to win the championship in women's volleyball of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27 at the UC gym.
The Lady Cardinals needed only three sets to dispose the Lady Navigators, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19, to sweep their best of three series after a commanding game one victory at the SLU Prince Bernhard Gym Friday afternoon.
"Sinabi ko sa team na wag na pakawalan ito kasi pag nakawala pa to sigurado magkakabuhay ang SLU," said coach Jun Nisperos after reclaiming the title they held in 2011 where they also defeated the same team in two games.
UB came out strong early in the game with their attack mode on as graduating players Joan Lunday and Princess Cariño pounded on the defense of the Lady Navigators.
Also taking cue from Lunday and Carino's good performance are first year player Carmela Dikensen and second year Raxen Madulid, chipping in significant blocks and attacks during the ball game.
Just like a well-oiled machine, the Lady Cardinals were able to sustain their fiery start with their defense holding off every attack from the Lady Navigators.
"Importante talaga yung depensa namin, pag gumana yung depensa natin okay na yung opensa natin kaya pag maganda ang depensa natin, mananalo tayo," added Nisperos.
Nisperos added the team also pounded SLU’s lack of setter which spelled the big difference in their finals match-up.
Pumped up with their performance in the first and second sets, Lunday and Cariño continued wrecking SLU’s defense giving UB a 17-10 lead.
But errors killed the Lady Navigators toward the end of the game and failed to trim the lead.
"Sobrang saya kasi bago kami magraduate eh nag-champion kami at yun ang magandang naiwan namin sa UB," said the Criminology student Lunday.
"Yung hirap namin sa araw–araw na training nag pay off at talagang ginalingan namin para maganda naman yung pag-exit namin sa team," added Carino.
In the men's division, SLU scored their fourth title in a row after dismantling the University of the Cordilleras in four set.
The Navigators swept the Jaguars in a hard fought four set win, 25–15, 25-13, 21-25, 25-16.
"Overwhelmed kami although nag-relax kami sa third set, binigyan nila ng buhay yung UC kaya sabi ko wag nilang bigyan ng kumpyansa yung kalaban kasi championship ito," said SLU coach Gerald Peralta.
