THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology took control of the last two sets to turn a 1-2 deficit into a thrilling 13-25, 25-22, 11-25, 30-28, 15–13, victory over La Trinidad Benguet in the men’s volleyball of the Domogan Cup Baguio – Benguet Inter Employee Volleyball Tournament 2013.
BJMP's Marcelo Kitong scored a game high 14 points and two blocks to rally his team to win against a strong LTB team at the St. Vincent gym.
BJMP coach and Inspector Romel Basilan said although they made a lot of errors during the game, they were able to make adjustments in the latter sets.
"During the first set nakita ko na agad na kulang ang depensa ng team, kaya naman sinabi ko sa mga boys to tighten their defense kaya nakapag-tie kami sa second, naulit ang lapses sa third so I told them to stay with how we planned set two kaya yan umabot naman kami sa decision," said Basilan.
“Nakita rin naman na malakas yung kabilang team, pero we were able to manage solutions kaya yun nanalo kami,” added Basilan.
Team LTB started out strong against BJMP playing good offensive strategies trailing the opponents early as far as 13 points, 24-11.
But BJMP was never shaken off easily in set two, as they forced LTB to commit errors in their own side of the floor and tie the score at 15-15.
LTB then leaned on Benjie Madriaga, Bogart Ham, and Edgar Kitab for an important third set win.
BJMP however exploded after trailing LTB in an early 4-0 score during set four as Kitong exploded with eight points that saw the score tied at least 15 times before finishing off La Trinidad to force a decision.
Collective efforts from team LTB lifted their squad to tie the ball game at 12 but the superb defense from Chester Lumang-ay and Bon-Bon Pancog of BJMP sealed them the victory.
"Naunahan kami kanina so ang iniisip lang namin eh paabutin ng five sets, ang naging motivation for us eh basta gawin lang kung anong pinag-usapan na laro kaya yun ok naman nanalo sa decision," said Kitong.
