THIRTY teams from Baguio City and Benguet formally opened their title bid with the second conference of the Phoenix Cup VIII that formally kicked off at the Easter College gym during the weekend.
Organized by the Cordillera Phoenix Cup Incorporated, this season’s second conference will house six brackets consisting of different teams, that will battle for the title in the tournament now on its eighth season.
Headed by Clifford Bossman Sy, together with Arthur Allad-iw, Gualberto Balabag, Delfin Goyen, Jeremy Malaga, Jim Coy-om, and Alfred Fernandez, Phoenix Cup intends to serve as one of the main basketball leagues in Baguio City and Cordillera.
Gualberto Balabag, co-organizer of the event, said they are still open for upcoming participants.
“Since nasa preliminary stage pa lang tayo marami pang humahabol na teams sa registration, so maybe until the first week we can still accept more participants to join,” said Balabag.
“Marami pang former teams na kasali na rin sa mga dating season ang hinihintay namin,” Balabag added.
Organizers said Phoenix Cup was brought to develop fraternal friendship and camaraderie amongst sports groups, aficionados and also promote good health practices.
The organizers also want to help the physical development of the players, develop skills, and give knowledge about different sports through trainings and seminars.
The basketball competition will hold its scheduled events in Easter College gym and will run from October until the first week of December.
Jeremy Malaga earlier said that all winning teams will receive trophies and cash incentives that will be given during the closing of the season’s event.
“Lahat ng winning teams and participants will be awarded with trophies and cash as prizes dun na mismo sa closing program ng event,” Malaga pronounced.
