SOME 200 volleyball referees took their time out to upgrade their level of skills in the National Referees Congress held at the University of the Cordilleras gym recently.
Organized by the Philippine Volleyball Organization Referee’s Commission in partnership with the University of the Cordilleras headed by Engr. Alec Mapalo with the UC - Center for Sports Development, adjudicators of the said sport renewed their education and training in order to update themselves with the rubrics of volleyball.
Event co-chairman Danny Cong-o said the congress aims to update the knowledge of volleyball referees in the whole of the Philippines.
"Fortunately dito sa Luzon madalas Baguio City ang nag-hohost nito, every two years we gather referees so they can renew themselves and their licences," said Cong-o.
"Alam naman nila na kapag hindi sila nag-renew ng mga license nila eh hindi sila pwedeng mag-practice ng profession nila," Cong-o added.
The congress also aims to upgrade the referees level of knowledge and at the same time seen to promote those in the lower level.
“Meron kasi tayong tinatawag na level one, two, at three, so madalas kapag pumasa sila sa tests tataas sila tapos yung mga level three it’s just a matter of renewing their licences,” Cong-o said.
Referees underwent a series of examinations including written and practical demonstration to ensure the standardization of their learning.
UC-CSD head and co chairman Ruel Costina said the event is part of the corporate social responsibility of the university.
“We help simply because hindi lang naman ito para UC but it is also for all the members of this volleyball congress,” Costina said.
Participants came as far as Zamboanga, Region 4-A, Bicol, Mindoro, Baguio, Benguet and other neighboring places.
Organizers hope with these gathering, referees will be able to attain uniformity and standardization especially of calls when judging in courts.
“Yung mga hindi naman nakapag-attend sa congress na ito will still have their chances to renew either sa Visayas or sa Mindanao congress na,” Cong-o quipped.
