WORLD Boxing Council interim Asian featherweight champion Ranel Suco eyes for a quarterfinals stint when he battles an older Romanian in the 51st WBC World Cup.
The 27-year-old Suco, who is being handled by Highland Boxing gym in La Trinidad of boxing promoter Brico Santig will square off against world-rated Romanian Viorel "The Bomber" Simon on November 8 in Bangkok, Thailand a day before the boxing council’s convention closing.
The winner in the Suco-Simion fight will advance in the quarterfinals of the ongoing cup and will likely face Britain's rising star Lee Selby.
"Magangdang laban ito para kay Ranel para makita natin kung effective 'yung training nila," said manager Santig.
Suco won the WBC Asian Title from unheralded compatriot Prell Tupaz last February at PAGCOR Grand Theater, Airport Casino Filipino in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, a victory that catapulted Suco as a contestant into the WBC World Cup.
Since turning pro in 2008, Suco has carved out a 15-7-2 win loss draw record that includes six knock outs.
Suco has only lost one in his last five fights where he lost to China’s Jomthong Chuwatra for the WBC Asia Council Continental super featherweight title via a 12 round home town unanimous decision in China in November last year.
Prior to his loss in china, Suco racked up three straight wins where he snatched the vacant WBC Asia Council Continental super featherweight title in October 2011 at the La Trinidad gymnasium against Richard Olisa.
Meanwhile, Simion, is a former WBC International Champion with an impressive record of 16 wins and one loss with six knock outs.
Simion is also a former Olympian who played for Romania during the 2004 Athens Olympics in Greece.
