BAGUIO City opened its title bid on a high note after snatching the bronze medal in the 500 meter run secondary boys division as hostilities in the Batang Pinoy 2013 – Luzon Leg formally kicked off in Iba, Zambales.
Reymark Quezada placed third to hit the first medal for team Baguio as the sport rivalry fired off Wednesday early morning.
Team Baguio athletics head coach Danilo Alimbuyao said it was a good start for the athletes even though they fail to hit the gold medal in their first run at the Zambales Sports Complex.
"Ok lang naman yung naumpisahan, nahirapan lang talaga against sa mga kalaban pero overall okay kasi meron paring nakuha," said Alimbuyao.
"Nasa 15 years old and below kasi ang category, mas malaki sana ang chance na gold agad ang nasungkit kung yung 13 and below ang naisalang sa takbuhan," Alimbuyao added.
The fourteen year old runner from Baguio City National High School said it was quite a big adjustment to run in a hot weathered environment.
"Mas sanay na kasi yung mga ka-compete ko sa mainit na lugar, hindi tulad ko sanay kasi sa lamig ng Baguio," said Quezada.
"Pero okay lang kasi nakakuha pa rin ng medal, sa next na event siguro subukan kong bumawi," Quezada added.
Quezada will also battle in the 1,500 meter race, where he will attempt to bag the first place against the other power house runners from Luzon.
NCR topped the race event, followed by Candon City who had only a slight lead against the runner from Baguio.
Meanwhile, the on-going 100 meter hurdle race in the girls division seems to bring promise for a possible first gold medal in athletics as the elimination reaches its conclusion.
“Makikita natin kung patutunayan ng mga bata natin na kaya nila, kasi malaki naman ang chance kelangan lang na ayusin ang performance,” said an optimistic Alimbuyao.
Baguio athletes’ eyes to snatch the over-all title in the Luzon leg after Pangasinan stole the crown last year in the regional eliminations but won the national championship at the expense of power house National Capital Region.
