DATA CENTER completed their magical ride in the 2013 Cordillera Higher Education Sports Athletic Association in sweeping their rival at the close of the men’s basketball tournament.
With a perfect 8-0 record at the close of the eliminations, Data Center simply dominated their rivals in the semis before finishing of Kings College of the Philippines in game two of their best of three finals series, 78-61.
“Our preparations prior to the league were the key. I’ve talked to all the players and I told them everybody has a role to play and good thing they listen,” said Data Center coach Ernesto Sanchez Jr.
“I owe it to my team captain Kerubin Gonzaga who really rallied the team behind his leadership,” added Sanchez Jr.
The Spartans got going in the second quarter, pulling away 28-12 on a 9-0 run with 7:45 remaining bankrolled by the five points coming from Gonzaga on two steals and two assist.
Data Center just simply wouldn’t look back after that 9-0 run in the first three minutes of the second period and enjoyed a 44-32 lead at half time.
But after posting a 12 point advantage, Data Center slackened a bit with KCP slowly trimming that double digit deficit into a two point ball game on a 20-10 run for a 54-52 count with 3:20 remaining.
Threatened by a possible upset, the defending champion Saprtans punctuated a run of their own in the last three minutes of the third canto and end the period with a nine point 64-55 lead.
It was a virtual no-contest as the Spartans utterly dominated KCP in the payoff quarter towards the last buzzer.
Data Center capped of their 2013 season with an unblemished record of 13 wins at the close of the tournament and at the same time retain the men’s basketball crown they won last year over Cordillera Career Development College.
“Masaya ako kasi ngayong last year ko na eh champion ulit ang team,” said Gonzaga who churned in a game high of 35 points including eight assists.
“Piang-igihan lang namin lahat ng game naming this year tapos yung ogal kasi namin eh makuha ulit yung championship,” added Gonzaga who drew support from Mark Anthony Juna’s 21 markers.
Kings College earlier made it a close ball game with both squads failing to score that saw the ball game tied at 4-4 in the first three minutes of the ball game. But Data Center finally made their shots en route to a 19-12 lead at the end of the first period.
