BAGUIO City athletes continued their dominance in almost all of the sports being played in the Luzon leg of the 2013 Batang Pinoy in Iba, Zambales.
The Summer Capital judokas grabbed four gold medals, two silver and three medals to win the over-all crown in the competition against judo players from all over Luzon.
Head coach Corazon Albido said the team will undergo hard training before the upcoming national games on November.
“Kailangan na nating paghandaan ng mabuti ang nationals, kasi pag-dating natin doon aasahan natin mas magiging mahigpit ang competition,” added Albido.
Despite topping the Luzon leg, Albido worries her athletes will have a hard time against opponents during the nationals.
“Nakita ko kasi dito na maraming disadvantages ang mga manlalaro natin kagaya na lamang sa height, NCR competitor really have a plus pagdating dyan,” Albido said.
“No doubt Cordilleran people will have enough power, kaso natural din na mas maliliit ang mga bata natin,” added Albido.
Gold medalist in their respective events are Jedd Andrei Dikim (minus 73kgs), Russell Rhey Lorenzo (minus 55kgs), and Kimmer Lubante (minuss 66kgs) in the boys division while Airielle Doyawen (minus 52kgs) earned the top spot in the distaff side.
Bronswick Dumawat (minus 66kgs) and Christian Jefferson Soliva (minus 73kgs) earned silver medals for boys, while Braille Bangdo (minus 57kgs), and John Tagay-an (minus 50kgs) took bronze. Charmea Quilino also won the bronze in the in the minus 57kgs category.
Of more than 200 LGU participants in the judo Luzon qualifiers, 150 has already disqualified due to some technicalities.
Albido on the other hand said it will be a challenge to compete in the nationals since other disqualified LGU’s will still have chance to enter.
“Andiyan kasi yung mga fighters from La Salle, Ateneo at iba pang prime universities na talagang magaling, makakahabol pa sila sa Bacolod City,” Albido said.
City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said he is happy for the whole team.
“Dapat lang na manalo sila, pero ang mas dapat na pagtuunan ng pansin ngayon eh magprepare ng mabuti for the coming nationals,” Gonzales said.
