BAGUIO City’ running pride Dino Mantiles held his own against the world best skyrunners by finishing sixth in the 27th edition of Mt. Kinabalu Climbathon in Sabah, Malaysia.
Mantiles, who was the top Filipino in the Philippine Skyrunning Association’s Pilipinas Akyathlon in Itogon, finished the 33 kilometer race with a time of five hours, 14 minutes and 11 seconds in the elite men category.
David Simpat of Malaysia topped the men’s elite with a time of 4:12:29 while Japan’s Dai Matsumoto and Malaysia’s Safrey Sumping completed the top three.
The Kinabalu Climbathon first started in 1987 where its origins can be traced to the Sabah Parks’ intention of creating a rapid rescue squad made up of a team of rangers who can bring down injured climbers fast.
It will be Mantiles’ first foray into international race outside the country after finishing second behind French national Clement Dumont in the Pilipinas Akayahtlon series in February which qualified him for the Malaysian race.
“The Akyathlon event is actually one of the three Asian Skyrunning events sanctioned by the International Skyrunning Federation that includes the Mt. Fuji in Japan and the Kinabalu Climbathon,” said ISF secretary general Nina Dacanay.
The first Kinabalu Climbathon was an all Malaysian affair for a year until it was opened to international participants. Sabah Tourism Board saw the potential of the event being a promotional tool to promote Sabah and took over organising the event in 1995.
The Climbathon became a member of the World Mountain Running Association in 1997 and hosted the 15th World Mountain Running Trophy in 1999 at Kinabalu Park. In 2003, the Climbathon was admitted as member of the International Skyrunning Federation, the international body that promotes sports at high altitude.
Since then, the Climbathon has been a part of the Federation’s Skyrunner World Series until 2012. International top runners from various countries race in the series’ venues to gather points to become the series world champion.
