BAGUIO City wrestlers made their presence felt at the close of the 2013 Batang Pinoy Luzon leg in Iba, Zambales by collecting two gold, three silver, and five bronze medals to lift the city in the overall championship.
Head coach Maria Teresa Asuncion said despite not landing atop the ranks this year, she is still proud of her grappling kids.
“All in all masaya ako na kahit papaano may mga nakuha ang mga bata, alam ko naman na almost lahat sila ngayon eh bago so kahit hindi puro gold ang hinakot okay pa rin,” Asuncion said.
“It is not the quantity of the medals that counts, it’s the quality of the children being produced and taught through this sport,” added Asuncion.
Gheno Van Gayman (42kg) took a gold medal in bulingit A category, while Henry Foy-os (59kg) bag another one in the school boys category. Samuel Bagtila (42kg) and Jess Ngolab (49kg) took each a silver in bulingit B and in bulingit B while Anthonie John Tenollar (53kg) and Fam Kylo Gadgad (59kg) also snatched silver in the 15 and below category.
Raphael Joshua Bulayo (42kg), Geramin Gayman (38kg), Maurice Libayo (42kg) and Christian John Espiritu (47kg) all received bronze.
Asuncion said their coaching staff plans to invite trainers from the National Sports Association to develop the wrestling skills of the young athletes.
“It is only now that we noticed the lack of technique from out wrestlers, so we plan to request an NSA trainer to supervise them before the national qualifiers,” Asuncion added.
“Even the technical committee said they are amazed by the power shown by our fighters, we only lack of proper wrestling techniques to go with it,” said Asuncion.
Last year Baguio held the northern Luzon overall title in wrestling with a total of 11 gold medals.
Meanwhile boxing athletes failed to respond to the contenders from all-over Luzon as they were only able to secure three bronze medals.
Earlier the Philippine Olympic and Sports Commission announced the transfer of the venue for the national leg of Batang Pinoy on November 19-23 from Zamboanga City to Bacolod City due to the recent war between the military and Muslim rebels in the area.
