BAGUIO'S swimming team didn't leave any stones unturned in catching three gold medals, six silver and four bronze to help propel the Summer Capital to the overall championship of Batang Pinoy Luzon leg in Iba, Zambales.
With more than 200 competitors in the swim meet, head coach Nelso Hipolito said the team from Baguio had shown potential even with the presence of powerhouse Quezon City.
"Malaki ang chance ng mga bata na eto pagdating sa competition against mga taga ibang lugar, kayang-kaya natin makipag-sabayan sa mga top rank sa buong Pilipinas," Hipolito said.
"Mahuhusay naman ang mga nagtuturo sa kanila, in time siguro sa nationals makakahakot pa ulit tayo ng marami pang medals," added Hipolito.
Dan Christian Leyba took down gold in the 12 and under category of the 200 meter backstroke, where he also won two silvers in the 50 meter and 100 meter backstroke, while Jenkins Lorenzo Labao topped the 50 meter butterfly race, and score two silvers in the 400 meter and 100 meter butterfly in the 15 and below category.
Labao and Leyba also played with Renz Gawidan and Neil Nazarro to grab the gold in the 4x50 meter freestyle.
Labao, Leyba, Nazzaro together with Nathan Cheng then teamed up to land third place in the 4x50 medley relay.
In the distaff, Allana Sagubo took a silver in the 200 meter backstroke and bronze in the 100 meter back stroke, while Elize Liana Labao bagged a silver medal in the 50 meter backstroke and bronze in the 50 meter butterfly, both in the 12 and under category.
City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said it was quite a good performance the young athletes had shown in this competition.
“Inexpect na natin na mahusay ang mga kalaro from NCR including other Luzon contingents, with the supplied gold tally masaya naman tayo,” said Gonzales.
“We expect to do better sa nationals, naniniwala naman ako sa lahat ng coaches at young athletes natin,”Gonzales added.
Coaching staff for the swimming team also include Walter Oppod, Mark Carino, Jeffrey Padilla, and Smith Guibani.
Batang Pinoy National Finals will commence on November 19-23 in Bacolod City.
