Mt. Ugo readies for 3rd Akyathlon-A A +A

RUNNERS from all over the globe will once again test their supremacy and endurance as the municipality of Itogon, Benguet hosts the Pilipinas Akyathlon: The Philppine International Skyrace which will take place at Mt. Ugo, Barangay Tinongdan on the 8th of February 2014.
Organized by the Philippine Skyrunning Association (PhilSky) and now on its third year, the first leg of the Asian Mountain Circuit which also includes the Fuji Mountain Race and Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon will gather skyrunners in the event backed by the Department of Tourism.
PhilSky president and 2014 Pilipinas Akyathlon project manager Jules Picato said they look forward to the positive outcome of the incoming third installment of the competition to take place in Mt. Ugo in Itogon.
"We look forward to the success of next year’s akyathlon and we are open to invite everyone not only professional runners but all enthusiast alike," said Picato.
"Since this is the third year that we hold it at Mt. Ugo, we the organizers will make sure that it will be a whole new memorable experience for all the coming participants," Picato pronounced.
The 35.3 kilometer out-and-back race will showcase magnificent views of surrounding mountains including portions of Binga and Ambuklao dams which will take a turning point at the summit of Mt. Ugo which has an elevation of 2,162 meter above sea level.
Organizers said skyrunning differs from the usual foot races because of the higher level of competition that does not only limit to the racing athletes but also with the effect of the uphill terrains and the high altitude environment.
Registration fee will be at 2,400 pesos for Philippine residents and $60 for foreign entries, registration period will start November 1 – December 31, 2013 via online registration at www.runners runner.com, there will only be a maximum of 200 slots for interested runners.
Organizers said trophies and valuable outdoor prizes will be awarded to the top three overall winners of the male and female categories, which will be categorized in age groups of 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and above.
Medals will also be given to all race finishers with a finishers t-shirt and will also be qualified to receive prizes during the raffle.
The Filipino top male and female finishers will represent the country in the 28th Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon on October 2014.
Partnering with this event are the Provice of Benguet, Municipality of Itogon, Barangay Tinongdan, R.O.X. Philippines, and Cordillera Conservation Trust.
