A POSSIBLE rare grandslam will be in the eyes of Baguio City young athletes as the national finals of the 2013 Batang Pinoy formally kicks off November 19-23 in Bacolod City.
Close to 100 athletes aged 15 years-old and below with their coaches and representatives from the Summer Capital will compete and try to record a rare three-peat against other LGU’s from all over the Philippines.
City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said Baguio will probably take once again the overall championship for this year’s sports meet.
“I would not tell that we won already pero as of now leading na agad tayo since natapos na ang nationals ng ibang sports event kung saan humakot na agad ang mga atheletes natin,” said Gonzales.
“Pagdating sa Bacolod marami pa tayong aasahan na hahakot gaya ng arnis at taekwondo na malakas din ang mga dadalhin natin na mga representatives,” Gonzales added.
Baguio has already recorded 21 gold medals for the national standings, where wushu has 15, archery with five, and one from motocross.
The Visayas qualifying leg champion Cebu City has already bagged 15 gold medals where they dominated most in the dancesport competition.
Gonzales also mentioned since last month where the Luzon leg was held in Iba, Zambales, many of the qualified athletes chosen have already put themselves in a high level of training.
“Angat na agad tayo so maybe what we need to do is to continue maintaining our lead pagdating sa competition proper,” Gonzales quipped.
Sports to be played in the nationals will be athletics, boxing, chess, judo, lawn tennis, swimming, and wrestling.
Winners from the Batang Pinoy National Qualifiers will represent the country in the coming second edition of Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China in 2014, and for other international age group competitions.
