REAGAN Acdong fired 23 big points to hand Golden Pine Hotel its second straight loss in the open division of the Friendship Cup season 29 at the Easter College gym during the weekend.
Beneco scored their second win in five outings by stopping the Hoteliers, 98-89 to keep its flickering hope alive in the tournament hatched by the SLU Boys High Batch 80.
"Na-challenge nalang ang buong team noong second quarter, alam namin na maraming errors ang na-commit sa umpisa," said Beneco first stringer Felix Sia.
"Noong una talagang matamlay, pero we strengthen our defense at we worked to hustle on the floor," added Sia.
Golden Pine took an early lead at the start of the first quarter as Paul Catbagan and Alvin Alindoza dropped 16 points to close the quarter with a 15-21 lead.
But the power distributors stepped up on the offense during the second quarter that tied the ballgame at 26 all on a Mike Bocasan basket.
The hoteliers tried to keep up with their opponents but Beneco's Acdong and Bocasan teamed up by firing another 18 points run that closed the half at 46-36.
Golden Pine staged a comeback in the third canto as Alindoza, Catbagan, and Dave Stapely carve combined for 16 points to close the gap at 55-52 with 5:46 remaining in the period.
But the power distributors carried their scoring prowess from the first half and pulled away at the close of the third canto and enjoy a 73-66 lead at the turn of the pay off canto.
Golden Pine then found their selves in a shooting slump in the fourth quarter, while Beneco’s Bocasan and Emerson Esgana combined for another 15 points that extended the gap in the payoff canto.
“Naghigpit lang talaga kami sa depensa, mabibilis sila compared sa team namin kaya doon kami bumawi,” said Acdong after the game.
“Sana sa next game magawa namin na pagbutihin pa ang laro, kailangan pagandahin pa ang ball rotation,” Acdong added.
