JEROME Wanawan returned to the winning circle by pummeling his way to a unanimous decision against Dindo Camansa in the main event of Team Lakay Championship 8: A December to Remember at the Baguio Convention Center.
Wanawan showcased his superb ground fighting skills and as he exhausted the pride of Reamico, Biagtan Gym, Cavite, in the three-rounder main event December 14.
“At first I was a bit hesitant since I was still trying to get my range hitting him, but during the second round I was already confident and I totally knew what to do with him,” said the23-year-old Wanawan.
“I knew he was in a very big advantage at striking since he is the taller fighter, so I took the battle down to the ground where I can control him,” Wanawan added.
The Lakay from the La Trinidad stable gave his opponent a hard time during the first round delivering two successful takedowns earning him the point advantage and won his fourth in six fights.
But Camansa was able counter in the second round landing some devastating punches to the head that backed-off Wanawan.
Wanawan however answered back immediately with his own striking prowess landing some kicks and punches to the head and body.
Camansa then took the battle to the ground in the second round but the Lakay fighter proved to be steadier in their ground game.
With the start of the third round, Wanawan made it a striking battle delivering an overhand right and followed it up with a takedown.
Camansa tried to get back on his feet but Wanawan’s grappling skills was hard for the Cavite native to counter with the Team Lakay fighter almost nailing the visitor in the fourth and final round with a rear naked choke attempt.
Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao said Wanawan’s victory will be a good momentum for the fighter.
“This is a good exposure and practice at the same time for Jerome in preparation of his coming fight in PXC this February or March,” Sangiao said.
“Although Team Lakay dominated the event, we expect that there will be more strong fighters to emerge since the MMA community continue to grow, we should keep training,” Sangiao added.
