GUISAD Valley National High School capped four gold, five silver and nine bronze medals to rule boxing event in the recently concluded Palarong Panglungsod 2013.
John Michael Guinoban topped the 36-38 kg event to open Guisad’s campaign in the boxing event that saw Johnny Legaspi (40-41.1 kg), Jeff Rodriguez (44-46 kg), and Ronnie Walcien (46.1-49 kg) following suit in winning the event’s gold medals.
With Guinoban winning the gold in the 36-38 kgs, Guisad Valley swept the weight class as Derick Galindez, Martch Alet Winnie, and Jerome Ivan completing the top four finishers.
Reggie Suclad from Happy Hollow National High School topped in the 38.1-40 kg category with GVNHS’ Jeff Ryan Murphy, Moises Ubaro, and Junvic Gubaten taking the silver and bronze medals.
Guisad also came dominating the 40.1-42 kgs weight division with Legaspi bringing home the gold while Carl Tam, Jasper Ateteo, and Green River King Amdengan completed the top four medalists.
The 44-46 kgs event also saw GVNHS’ Rodriguez, Jonel Almoite, Deighton Cafay, and Mark Anthony Dumpit winning the top four in the event while Walcien, Janrey Boy-os, Joshua Dim-as, and Allen De Pedro, all from GVNHS took the top ranks in the 46.1-49 weight division.
Guinoban, Suclad, Legaspi, Rodriguez, and Walcien were chosen as first picks to be represent the city in the upcoming regional games next year to be hosted by perennial runner-up Benguet.
The second stringers who will comprise the team will include Galindez, Murphy, Tam, Almoite and Boy-os if changes will happen before the CARAA meet.
Assistant tournament manager Cildo Evasco said the condition in the boxer’s weight three weeks before CARAA meet will be the basis if they will continue to train for the regional event.
Boxing event will push through in the annual regional meet despite the death of a 16 year old boxer last week after suffering comma during his stint in the Central Luzon Athletic Association.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisto Umali in an statement said contact sports such as boxing would be cancelled only in the regional level depending on the region and not in the Palarong Pambansa.
He added the cancellation of contact sports in the regions will still depend on officials.
Besides boxing, other contact sports include taekwondo, wushu, wrestling, and arnis, according to the official.
