CLOSE to 30 high school students from the Baguio City National High School smashed their way to victory as the BCNHS-SPS Table Tennis Team conducted a fund raising tournament recently.
Dubbed as “City High Beginners League”, enthusiasts gathered for the one day event at the BCNHS campus.
Tournament manager and SPS coach Erwin Shim Fonite said the event was mainly for the promotion of table tennis.
“One of the purposes of this league is to strengthen or better yet at the same time maintain the promotion of table tennis especially to the younger generation,” said Fonite.
“Alam naman natin na table tennis is one of the sports na hindi gaanong pinapansin, that is why we try to develop yung pagkagusto ng mga bata sa larong ito,” Fonite added saying it will be the sixth time the tournament was held.
“The earlier tournaments we were able to invite other schools as far as Benguet to participate, it is only now that we focused to invite beginners within BCNHS only,” Fonite quipped.
John Louie Galang topped the boys division, while Gabriel Oqias settled for second place, and Reilloc Cabading with Ian Thomas Manalo placed third in the tournament.
In the distaff, Shannon Dean Balicha won the championship, with Roxanne Dhale Vinluan, Deina Najarila, and Althea Nicole Dulay came in the second and third placers.
Winners in the tournament were awarded medals and certificates as proceeds will be used for the repair and improvement of equipment of the BCNHS-SPS table tennis team.
Fonite said they aim to unite Baguio City and Benguet to develop a more competitive performance when it comes to playing table tennis regionally at the same time in the national level of play.
“Recently kasi Baguio and Benguet already produces athletes na talagang may potential pagdating sa larong ito,” Fonite said.
“Alam natin na long term ang target but we don’t care as long as we develop athletes who will be able to compete,” Fonite added.
