Special events up for BBEAL's second phase-A A +A

THREE side events are seen to drum up the second phase of competition in the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27 when action resumes later this month.
Living to this season’s theme “Reboot”, BBEAL officials will try to add color by adding special events that will enhance the competition and cheering gala of the different participating universities from Baguio and Benguet.
BBEAL 2013 commissioner Alec Mapalo said earlier the league is trying to re-invent itself in a bid to boost interest of students in the league.
“We want to elevate BBEAL as a league that is at par with UAAP and NCAA. But it will not be overnight, it takes small steps,” Mapalo said.
Included for the side events lined-up are the body building competition scheduled January 18, the pageant search for Mr. and Ms. BBEAL and the fun run activity slated sometime February.
BBEAL officials said the special events with the sport competitions will breed interest for students to be more supportive of their schools.
Sport events lined up this January include softball, lawn tennis, arnis, baseball, judo, and taekwondo, while wushu, football, and athletics are scheduled for February.
The University of Baguio Cardinals, who topped at the close of the first phase of the season with 8-1-3 gold-silver-bronze haul, will eye to defend their taekwondo titles against last season’s contenders Saint Louis Navigators in both the men and women division.
The Navigators who is in second place overall in the medal tally during the 27th season’s first phase are firm with its 4-7-4 medal record.
The University of the Cordilleras Jaguars, placing a decent third in the medal tally at the first phase’s conclusion has a 3-7-3 medal haul, and is keen on defending the women’s crown in judo.
The host Jaguars wushu team will also try to generate more awards in the martial arts competitions.
Cordillera Career Development College Admirals is the current men’s judo champion remains to be the strongest contenders for the season’s title, with the Cardinals setting the challenge to steal the limelight with its own judoka squad.
Benguet State University, meanwhile, will defend their crown in softball for the women’s with SLU defending the men’s title.
Other participating schools are Baguio College of Technology, Cordillera Career Development College, University of the Philippines-Baguio, Pines City Colleges, Philippine Military Academy and Baguio Central University.
The BBEAL committee said they are looking forward to the success of the lined activities for the second phase.
