A THRONG of at least 2,000 runners are expected to answer the starting gun as the first two race distances of the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League gets going next month.

Students coming from the 10 member schools of the BBEAL will be among the participants in the league’s first foray into road foot race tentatively set February 8.

But 2013-2014 BBEAL Commissioner Aloysius Mapalo, assistant vice president for Communication of host University of the Cordilleras, believes that there will be more as they expect supporters as well as alumni coming back for a homecoming reunion of sorts.

"We will be having a special biggest delegation award that will not only have the students but faculty, employees, supporters and alumni," said Mapalo.

Registration fee for the five kilometer fun run is P150, while P300 will be charged for those joining the 10 kilometer run that offers cash and trophies to the top three.

Former national athletics team member and now University of Baguio athletic director Ed Laureano will oversee the run that gives P2,000 to the winner, P1,500 and P1,000 to the second and third placers, respectively, in the 10 K run.

Laureano added the event will have two age categories, the 19 under and the 19-year-old and above for both men and women.

Mapalo said the event will raise funds for their remaining events of the 27th season particularly arnis, athletics, judo, lawn tennis, softball, taekwondo, wushu and the all-men baseball, boxing and football.

Participants will have singlets that will have a sticker indicating the color and logo of their school which will have I Heart on it, indicating their love and support of their school.

"They have to indicate what school they come from so the color and the biggest delegate will be given the special award," he added.

This year, Mapalo has been bullish in promoting the BBEAL to attract more students to the games and get alumni support. A Facebook group dedicated for BBEAL has been created last year during the start of their hosting which was a reboot, to give the event a fresher and more dynamic look.

The group has more than 1,100 members already.

The run will come a week before the Mr and Miss BBEAL expected to be staged at the UB gym, which is the biggest of the venues in the BBEAL.

The candidates will be competing in beauty, intelligence and personality and the men to wear basketball uniforms and the female competitors donning volleyball outfits.

"The fun run was supposed be staged the morning before the pageant but we will be in conflict with some of the events and maybe even the Philippine Military Academy alumni homecoming which is held near Valentines Day," he explained.

UC will close the 27th season of the BBEAL with an awards gala night on the March 8 where awards will be given to excelling athletes as well as the winning teams for the 18 sporting events. After the first phase of competition, UB has the upper hand with eight titles including men's basketball and women's volleyball. Saint Louis University comes next with four titles, while host UC has three.
