IN WHAT seemed to be a close game, Baguio City Jail inmates made sure the visiting journalist would languish in their exhibition game during the weekend.

The inmates closed out the mediamen, 80-69, in an exhibition game Sunday after a close game in the first three quarters of the ball game.

Although the mediamen tumbled late in the fourth pay-off period, members of the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club basketball team gamely gave the inmates their price… pieces of used clothing and toiletries, which are sometimes, hard to come by inside the jail.

The clothes where collected by the basketball team themselves, either clothes they no longer use, or from a good Samaritan wanting to share what ever extras he have.

“This is an annual gift giving activity of the basketball team and what a time to do it than after the holiday season because we know that some of the inmates need it too,” said coach Zards Gacad who was also able to raise some P5,000 in cash which were used as prizes for some of the parlor games organized by Sky Cable’s Migz velarde and Z Radio’s Tatang Edong Carta.

For the past seven years, the BCBC basketball team has been giving gifts to inmates during the holiday season dedicated to the inmates who were not often visited by their loved ones.

The group also donated sports equipment such as basket balls, volleyballs, chess and scrabble sets for both the male and female inmates in the past.

“It always feels good to give and reach out to our brothers inside the City Jail specially this time of the year which is the yuletide seasons,” added Velarde.

Velarde added the basketball game was only a side event for the gift giving activity which is to give entertainment to the inmates.
From a six point deficit at the start of the payoff canto, 54 – 60, the inmates slowly trimmed the deficit, adjusted on their defense and made sure the homecourt advantage was utilized.

Halfway in the fourth period, the inmates were already up by five, 65 – 60, on an 11 to nothing run.

The inmates added 15 more points in their production while allowing the visiting mediamen to only score nine points in the remaining 10 minutes of play.

“Whether we win or lose, it really doesn’t matter because our main purpose is to give happiness,” continued Velarde.

Gacad meanwhile said through the years they have played with the inmates, some of them have built friendship.

“Dun sa seven years na ginagawa naming ang project na ito minsa nagiging kaibigan na rin naming yung ibang mga inmates kaya kami bumabalik,” added Gacad.

And this early, the group is once again planning to return some time later this year for another gift giving with another game of hoops.
