DEFENDING champion Baguio City is set to earmark P4 million to fund the Summer Capital’s delegation for the annual Caraa (Cordillera Administrative Region Athletics Association) meet slated February 7-11 to be hosted by Benguet province.

DepEd-Baguio supervisor for MAPEH and Sports Coordinator Fernando Eleponga said they are waiting for the proposed budget to be released upon the approval of the City Council.

“As of the moment hinihintay pa rin natin ang approval ng budget sa City Council,” said Eleponga.

Eleponga added they expect the release of the funding right before the end of this month.

“Most of the time lagi naman na huli ang releasing niyan, but hopefully kapag may go signal na ibibigay at ibibigay naman kasi para iyan sa mga delegates na mag-rerepresent sa city eh,” Eleponga said.

“Hinihintay din natin ang presentation ng mga projected overall expenses sa Caraa, pagkatapos noon sigurado na may lalabas nang pondo,” added Eleponga.

Last year a total of P4.2 million was appropriated to support the city delegation during the regional sports meet in the province of Apayao.

Eleponga said most of the expenses will be for food, transportation, allowances, including incentives for the winning athletes.

“Although pagkakasyahin, sa tingin natin kulang, kasi maraming mga athletes natin ang mga nagiging medalist eh so paano mo pagkakasyahin ang specific amount kung mag-eexceed ang expectations to earn honors ang mga bata,” Eleponga quipped.

Meanwhile Councilor Faustino Olowan acknowledged the city’s deficiency when it comes to funding local athletes.

“Kaya nga we are in pursuit of a better sports program dito sa city to resolve such issues that deter local athletes in performing well sa kung saan mang competition,” said Olowan.

Olowan added he will ask his fellow councilors to review the proposed budget for Caraa and hopefully approves before the regional meet.

“The Department of Education really cannot shoulder all the expenses regarding that matter, kaya naman it will be a mutual partnership with the city to support all our representatives,” Olowan said.

“I believe there are a lot of potential young minds pagdating sa sports here in our city, but maybe sometimes some people oversee kaya nawawalan ng support,” Olowan continued.

This year, more than 650 delegations will raise the city’s flag in participation of the annual regional sports spectacle with 432 elementary and secondary athletes.
