SANDI Abahan pushed herself to the limit snatching second place in the Cebu City Marathon 2014 held at the Cebu I.T Park January 12.
Abahan prove to be the biggest leaper in this year’s CCM’s women’s local 42K category as she finished with just more than eight minutes behind Cebu’s elite female runner Monaliza Ambasa.
“Nagulat ako na nakatapos ako sa full marathon na yun landing sa second place, lalo pa at yung mga nasa top one and two ay panay locals,” said Abahan.
The 23 year-old BS Education student from the University of the Cordilleras said it was her first time to join the marathon.
“As first timer to be there and join Cebu Marathon siguro halos parehas rin naman ang pakiramdam gaya sa iba pang mga full marathon na nasalihan ko na dati,” said Abahan.
“Ang pinaka challenge during the race eh yung buhos ng ulan habang tumatakbo kami kasi mas mabigat ang pakiramdam, at the same time nakakatulong rin naman since kapag maaraw kailangan mo ring magbuhos paminsan-minsan para mabawasan yung pagod,” Abahan added.
Despite feeling sore because of her recent plantar fasciopathy (jogger’s heel) injury, Abahan said she forced herself to finish the race.
“Half-way siguro ng race naramdaman ko na yung sakit pero tinapos ko, siguro kung wala akong iniindang sakit during that time nagawa ko pang pagbutihin yung oras ko,” Abahan quipped.
“Maybe next year kung mayroon ulit sponsor for the race susubukan ko ulit sumali,” Abahan closed.
Ambasa topped the women’s local division after clocking 3:24:27 and was more than eight minutes ahead of Abahan clocking 3:32:05, while another local, Mereeis Ramirez got third place in 3:44:12.
Abahan together with fellow marathoner Mike Cruz from the Philippine Military Academy were the only runners to represent the Cordillera.
Cebu City Marathon was founded by the Cebu Executive Runners Club and accredited by the International Association of Athletics Federation with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, organized by Runrio Inc.
