SIX more sporting events are set to usher in this year's Cordillera Administrative Region Athletics Association slated February 7-11 in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The Department of Education started to incorporate new sport events to be added in the annual Palarong Pambansa, including other subsidiaries with regional, provincial, and district sports meet.

DepEd-Baguio supervisor for MAPEH and Sports Coordinator Fernando Eleponga said the department already started to expand the sporting event.

"Adding four more sports including two indigenous games will give more opportunities for our young children to develop and hone their skills in preparation for larger competitions in and out of the country," Eleponga said.

Sports to be included this year are wushu, futsal, billiards, and wrestling, with indigenous games like kadang-kadang and bunong-braso. In 2013, wushu, futsal and billiards were already included as a demonstration event in the Palarong Pambansa held in Dumaguete City.

According to the DepEd memorandum no. 2, s. 2014, all the six new sport competitions will remain as an exhibition game until the 2014 national games.

Wushu, football, wrestling, and billiards will be played among secondary students, while the indigenous games kadang-kadang and bunong-braso or “sangol” will be seen in the elementary contests.

Eleponga said inclusion of indigenous games in the national sports competition will help promote the department’s objective to strengthen Filipino customs in the present generation.

“Naglagay ang DepEd ng ganyang mga events para maging familiar ang mga estudyante natin sa mga bago at even sa mga native na sport,” Eleponga said.

“Actually that is a part of the new K-12 curriculum where the department will incorporate ang pagiging makabayan ng mga studyante pagdating sa sariling sport, we will look forward to its outcome since it will be the first time natin silang idadag-dag,” Eleponga added.

Close to 5,000 elementary and secondary students will be eyeing for a medals in this year’s CARAA coming from the different areas in the Cordillera comprising Baguio City, Abra, Apayao, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Ifugao, and the host province of Benguet.
