With Benguet governor Nestor Fongwan constantly egging his delegates to steal over-all title from perennial champion Baguio, City Mayor Mauricio Domogan said he welcomes the challenge coming from the host province in their bid for regional sports supremacy.
“That is a good challenge for every athletes here in the city. We know for a fact that Baguio is always the champion that’s why Fongwan wants to win the title this year. That’s part of the competition,” Domogan said during his weekly Ugnayang Panlungsod program.
For the past years, the Summer Capital continues to reign supreme in the regional sports meet with little opposition from rival provinces.
During the 2013 staging in Apayao, Baguio ran away with the over-all crown once again by amassing 872 points while its closest pursuer, Benguet has only 434.60 with Apayao coming in at surprise 3rd with 419 points.
With the over-all crown being eyed by the host province this time, Fongwan earlier said he has asked all athletes and coaches to start their training after the provincial meet in December.
The province has also allotted P5 million for its athletes just to make sure the over-all title won't slip this time.
"All athletes coming from the other towns of the province take temporary residence here in La Trinidad para mag-train dito na mismo sa lugar kung saan idaraos ang CARAA,” said Fongwan in an earlier interview.
Baguio City’s elementary is expected to lord once again in arnis, athletics, badminton boys, gymnastics, softball, swimming, tae kwon do and volleyball girls.
The high schoolers are seen to retain their crown in archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, boxing, chess boys, gymnastics, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis boys, tae kwon do, and tennis.
Benguet on the other hand will be strong in football, gymnastics, for the elementary level while the high school division is seen to retain the title in chess girls, and volleyball boys.
