CODALIAN rallied late in the fourth period and forced an overtime to nail a 109-101 victory against St. Joseph in the on-going eliminations round of the 1st Budz Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament 2013.

Johnny Batanes recovered his own missed shot in the last two seconds of regulation after trailing in the pay off canto to send the ball game into overtime Monday night at the Easter College.

“Malaking bagay yung naging takbo ng play namin before the last buzzer, actually nag-fail na yung intended na basket para kay Johnny pero na-recover ulit ang bola sa rebound and good thing na-convert to tie at mag-overtime,” said Codalian coach Orville Wankey.

Wankey added they already made adjustments to tighten their defensive strategies after the draw in the pay-off canto.

“Defensive stops, iyon ang naging game plan pagpasok ng overtime. Talagang inadvice sa mga players na huwag hayaang magkaroon ng chance to convert ang St. Joseph under the basket,” said Wankey.

“We hope to bring the momentum to our next game para makapasok sa semis, for now stick pa rin sa mga constant na strategy to win sa laro,” Wankey continued.

St. Joseph was able to control the ballgame after Mark Molina and Boshyong Dizo set a back-to-back fastbreak points that put them in front 82-86 with 3:16 left in the fourth quarter.

But it was cut down by Vic Dangle and King Pascual after anchoring a 8-4 run for Codalian to tie the game 90 all with 52 ticks left in the clock.

St. Joseph center Dave Stapely then made it a two point ball game after converting his lay-up with 36 seconds remaining.

Codalian went for a Hail Mary in the ensuing play but Molina stole the ball with 16 second left although his fastbreak attempt was chased down by Weng Pascual that forced a turnover with 9.2 seconds remaining.

Pascual then failed to convert a basket but Batanes freed himself for the put back and force extra five minutes of play.

Stapley and Dizo tried to take charge for St. Joseph in overtime but the trapping defense of Codalian made hard for the saints to get back in the ball game and trail 101-96 with 1:13 left in the extra period.

Molina however made it a four point game after dropping a triple with 12.6 left for a 105-101 count but Rey Gabino converted two more free throws to seal the win for Codallian.

King poured out 34 points with seven coming from the three-point line, including 26 in the first half that kept St. Joseph at bay, 52-45.

Dizo scored his season high 37 points for St. Joseph helping the team steal the lead at 70-71 in the third quarter with Molina adding his own 12 points.

Stapely generated another double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out in the 16 second mark of the overtime.

“Medyo nag-mimintis ang mga shot attempts ko pagpasok ng fourth quarter, buti nalang nag-step-up ang ibang players gaya ni kuya Johnny para kumapit and mag-steal ng win ngayong gabi,” King quipped.
