Lakay Central grapplers dominate

WITH a modest five gold medal haul, Lakay Central Gym simply dominated the 15th Team Lakay Grapplers Cup at the Igorot Park during the weekend.

Estrada Donga-as (Male Juniors +43 kg), Jarland Galaw-ey (Male Seniors A +65 kg), Leo Alejandro (Male Seniors A +72 kg), Frederick Matson (Male Seniors A +80 kg) and Hajimar Tawas (Male Juniors +58 kg) churned in gold medals for Lakay Central in the tournament, which is part of the annual Baguio Flower Festival.

"Ginagawa namin ang tournament na eto para madevelop nating yung wrestling skills ng mga participants specially sa mga mix martial arts figthers," said Team Lakay head coach and event organizer Mark Sangiao.

Mark Stephen Loman edged mix martial arts fighter Egly Diaz in the absolute division to lead the charge for Team Team Lakay La Trinidad who also won five gold medals in the event backed by DIGMA Clothing, Baguio Representative Nicasio Aliping, Bagsan Law Office and Malcom Travel Sale.

Also winning gold medals for Lakay La Trinidad are Jayvie Espada (Female Seniors -50 kg), April Osenio (Female Seniors +51 kg), Joshua Pacio (Male Seniors B +58 kg), and Gerard Gamsawen (Male Seniors B +65 kg)
Mt. Province placed third in the tournament aimed to provide a venue for students and athletes to showcase what they have been learning in the gym and to provide the athletes more exposure and experience, which are part of the development of the ground games of MMA fighters.

Francis Ventura (Male Seniors A +51 kg), Bryce Fagyan (Male Juniors +36 kg) Angela Afalio (Female Juniors +51 kg) and Stephanie Dakilay (Female Juniors +43 kg) topped their respective events for Mt. province of the event also supported by Greenwich Pizza- Session Road Branch and the Summer Capital Spa, Wellness and Therapeutic Massage Clinic.

Mariah Pauly (Female Juniors -40 kg) and Mikee Trinidad (Male Juniors -29 kg) snatched YMCA’s two gold medal haul in the tournament while Altitude Gym’s Mhel Remolar also went home with a gold in the Male Seniors B +41 kg event.

"The grappler's cup hopes to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among the competitors and to raise awareness on the effects of sports especially among the youth," added Sangiao of the tournament that saw the highest numbers of participants coming from Baguio, La Union, Mountain Province, Philippine Military Academy, YMCA- Baguio as well as visiting athletes from Switzerland.
