THE ballgame is on as four collegiate teams, including two out of town squads, start their title quest in the tip-off of the 8th staging of Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament this Sunday February 23 at the Easter College gymnasium.

Saint Louis University, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Lyceum-Northwestern University, and Team DOS, composed of college all-star ballers from the city will heat up action in the open bracket starting 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

Some 50 other teams are also seen to join the tournament which will be divided into six different brackets.

Overall event coordinator Edwin Edades said earlier the tournament will incorporate the purpose of promoting health and camaraderie among the enthusiasts of the sport.

“Just as usual, aside from creating a venue for playing basketball, the event is targeting to promote physical health, good friendship, and brotherhood amongst its participants,” Edades said.

“With it we can further develop yung skills ng mga mag-lalaro and makakatulong tayo by means of keeping people away from vices that does not only damage but will also generate problem in our community,” Edades added.

The basketball tournament officiated by the National Amateur Basketball Referees Association is expected to end by the third week of April.

The hometown SLU squad will start their title bid against the visiting DMMMSU at 2:00pm while the ballers from the Lyceum-Northwestern University will start the season out against the star-studded Team DOS at 3:30pm.

Organizers earlier projected the participants to grow higher in number as in the previous staging as part of the annual flower festival celebration in the Summer Capital.

“The other brackets will start within the week, marami pa kasing humahabol na teams and actually we are still opening the registrations until next week,” Edades added.
