Aliping Cup opens with 16 teams

SOME 200 playing athletes are set to vie for the crown as the first Congressman Aliping’s Volleyball Cup Tournament 2014 organized by the Philippine Volleyball Federation officially opened February 20 at the Engineer’s Hill covered court.

A total of 16 competing teams are set to showcase raw talent and skills as local squads from Baguio City and Benguet face-off in the tournament.

Tournament director Tommy San Pedro said the first instalment of the competition is overwhelmingly participated by the different teams.

“Coming to establish such tournament is quite decent because of the vast numbers of participating team na sumali, actually we can express that sports such as volleyball really is a window for people to develop camaraderie with each other,” San Pedro said.

San Pedro added he and the organizers are thankful for all the help sponsored by private patrons given to them.

“Salamat sa mga tao na tumutulong sa mga equipment and expenses to be used lalo na sa mga officiating, we are actually trying to do our best to come up with best expectations sa tournament na ito,” San Pedro said.
“Although we are looking for more sponsorship that would help to make this tournament a success,” San Pedro added.

The tournament is expected to run until the last week of March which is composed of eight different teams in two separate divisions for male and female.

Squads included in the distaff side are Saint Louis University Lady Navigators led by Marian Fleurizze Torres, Team Itogon led by Irene Fernando, Route 55 captained by Monica Santiago, Santa Escolastica Vilaage squad led by Louella Marie Costales, Baguio City Hall captained by Mars Nibaten, Dontogan Women’s Association, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation Inc., and Medina Belles squad.

The men’s team line-up includes Department of Education headed by Daniel Salvador, Easter College Inc. captained by Jerry Naoy, BVS Colleges, Santa Escolastica Village men’s headed by Ian Costales, SABM crew captained by Alexander Daniel, Black Orchids headed by Alexander Daniel, and NIIT-Baguio.

Organizers of the event said trophies, medals, certificates, and cash prizes will be awarded for the winning teams at the end of the season with the mythical six to be cited at the same time.
