THE Saint Louis University Laboratory High School team B outlasted other competing squads from the city to steal the crown in the recently concluded 1st Talk N’ Text Regional 3-on-3 challenge March 15-16 at the Engineer’s Hill covered court.
Galo Berlyn Garlejo dropped a huge basket in overtime to amplify a one point lead, 8-7, against the University of the Cordilleras Laboratory High School Jaguars team D after deucing at 6 all in the ten minute scheduled ballgame.
“We are very happy to win this 3-on-3 challenge, this is a first for our team and with the victory and all I guess the boys who won actually deserve the title,” said SLU-LHS coach Samuel Tadeo after the game.
“The last basket would really be credited from the team’s effort. They looked into their adjustments and went for the kill after coming up with an opportunity,” Tadeo added.
Being trailed 1-3 in the first three minutes of the ballgame patterned to FIBA streetball rules, the SLU Cubs rallied to take the lead, 5-3, in the 5:00 mark with Garlejo and Jay Atijera stepping up for the team.
The Cubs were able to extend the lead, 6-3, in the 2:55 running time mark of match-up, but it was Jonathan Ballon from the UCLHS Jaguars who stepped-up his game recovering rebounds and converting three straight points to tie the game in a 6 all deadlock.
Ballon then converted the next basket, 7-6, to end the game with a two point match point, but SLU-LHS was able to come up with a pick as Garlejo threw a Hail Mary basket from the outside line which delivered the huge upset to the UC squad.
SLU-LHS bested 31 other local teams with a clean 6-0 win-loss record, with Garlejo, Atijera together with Ian Chester Anis and Arvin Miko Daniel completing the four-man squad for the Cubs.
Backed by FIBA, the international governing body for basketball, the MVP group of companies, and in partnership with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the sports event serves as a pre-FIBA world cup hype for the Gilas National Team.
The champion team won P10,000 in cash price and will have an all-expense paid trip and chance to compete in the national finals facing 19 other teams from all over the country on May 24-25 in Manila.
Other schools who participated in the competition include Baguio City National High School, University of Baguio, Mt. Carmel Montessori, Berkely School Baguio, Fort Del Pilar High School, plus other city ballers.
