DAGSIAN United rallied towards the close of the ball game after St. Joseph’s meltdown in the pay off canto for an 88-86 win in bracket C of the 8th Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Trailing in the first three periods of the ballgame, Dagsian took over late in the final 10 minutes of the ball game to keep their title hopes alive at the Easter College gym.
“The team’s last minute performance was great, we were able to meet our expected output and we are happy to bag the victory tonight,” said Dagsian coach Noel Ferrer.
Ferrer added the team will carry their momentum in the succeeding games before the closing of the eliminations.
“Actually mahirap ang mga kalaro sa liga na ito this time, but I hope with the new guns entering our rosters we will be able to finish with a good placing at the close of the season,” Ferrer quipped.
Trailed by six points at the start of the fourth period, 58-64, Dagsian forced its way to tie the ballgame at 80 all with Louie Dumo, Aries Gazmin, and William Channas leading their team with 2:54 running in the clock.
But St. Joseph was able to regain the lead, 80-82, after former University of Baguio Cardinal Alvin Alindoza converted a fastbreak in the 1:40 mark.
But Dagsian stole the lead after Dumo converted four straight points, 84-82, with St Joseph trailing, 52.4 ticks left.
St. Joseph tried to bounce back but it Carlo Munoz dropped four more points on fastbreak that sealed the deal for Dagsian.
Dumo led Dagsian with 15 points, all made in the fourth quarter, while Johnson Carlos and Flynn Dawan added 14 score each.
Dave Stapely scored a double-double for St. Joseph with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Alindoza added 20 together with Bhogs Gatbonton scoring 13 points.
